| JournalDay 83 : Wednesday June 2nd. London to homeBA Flight 036 arrived slightly ahead of schedule at Heathrow Terminal 5, around 11.20am. It felt strange to be in this ultra-modern airport. Day 82 : Tuesday June 1st. Chennai to LondonThis was a strange day, because it didn't really have a beginning it just carried on from the previous day, because I hadn't slept the night before. Day 81 : Monday May 31st. ChennaiI'd tried to keep my birthday date secret from Sreedhar and his mum, because they would have done something special for me. But at some stage during the day, he was looking at my passport and he saw the DOB. Day 80 : Sunday May 30th. ChennaiIn the morning there was a fire nearby and a huge cloud of thick black smoke formed. It didn't look at all healthy. After about 30 minutes or so, the first fire engine appeared. It wouldn't be the last. Day 79 : Saturday May 29th. ChennaiThe plan was to spend the time updating the website, but there was a power cut which lasted for around 8 hours. There was nothing anyone could do. The substation at the local Polytechnic had blown up. Day 78 : Friday May 28th. ChennaiSt Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles, came to India in 52A.D. And he died there as a martyr in 72A.D. He was buried at Mylapore, San Thome, Chennai and the Basilica of St Thomas is built over the tomb - one of only three churches in the world built over the tomb of an Apostle. Day 77 : Thursday May 27th. RTUI'd set off from Manchester with the aim of raising £8,000 to build ten quality homes for ten poor families to replace homes like this one. I wanted to see houses under construction before leaving RTU. Day 76 : Wednesday May 26th. RTUHaving read about some of the terrible family backgrounds of some of the children under the care of RTU, visiting RTU's 'Miriam Children's Village' was a most delightful and humbling experience, a genuine highlight of my stay at RTU. Day 75 : Tuesday May 25th. RTUBrother James had not been in his home country, England, since the early 1970s and he'd not had a plate of chips since. I'd not had any chips myself for two an a half months and I was feeling it. But 40 years was a bit much! The poor man needed sorting out. Something had to be done. Day 74 : Monday May 24th. RTUFor some reason, there was a big staff meeting for all the departments of RTU, and it was to be held at a different venue - a village where RTU was doing some work. This was a perfect opportunity for me to escape to Kodaikanal - if I could get my hands on a motorcycle. Day 73 Sunday 23rd May. Brother James 85 today. It was 23rd May, Bro Jim's 85th birthday! I'd cycled a long way for a slice of his birthday cake, and, thankfully, Jo and David Cassidy, two very special old friends of Brother Jim, had sent a beautiful cake. Day 72 Saturday 22nd May. RTUBrother James had disappeared to Bodi, a couple of days before, as he tends to spend three or four days there each week, and I'd been prevented from going to see him there as, apparently, Brother James thought I would be 'taking too much of a risk' if I went there by motorcycle. This was a bit rich coming from a man who, at 85, is still riding on a two-wheeler around RTU. Day 71 Friday 21st May. RTU (tour of ferrocement, meal at VJs)I had cycled to RTU to raise funds to enable ten houses to be constructed for ten poor families. In the earliest RTU houses, we used timber in the roof construction and the doors and windows, but these days no wood was used at all, even in this window frame. Day 70 Thursday 20th May. RTUThirty years before, my best friend was a carpenter, the most talented carpenter I'd ever seen - before or since. Today I was determined to meet up with my old friend once more. It was also my dad's birthday. Day 69 Wednesday 19th May. Dindigul to RTUI was in Tamil Nadu! The road from Dindigul was filled with Hindu shrines - bright, colourful and well-maintained, unlike so many of the dwellings in the area. Day 68 Tuesday 18th May. Bangalore to Dindigulbrief update Feeling much better. Bus to Dindigul leaves @ 10pm (9 hour trip)Day 67: Monday 17th May. BangaloreBrief update. Paul will change his mode of transport today. Weakness from his illness, time, distance and the Indian heat are against him. He may get the bus to Dindigul today. He's found two internet cafes, the first had server problems and the second had no electricity but hopefully he'll eventually get a connection. Further update...Paul is hoping to be @ RTU on Wednesday morning (he's getting a bus to Dindigul tomorrow) Day 66: Sunday 16th May. BangaloreMy plan was to go to St Patrick's Church in the morning. I knew pretty much where it was, but something was wrong. Day 65: Saturday 15th May. Sira to BangaloreOn this day, I saw a lot of butterflies, especially in the morning, fluttering about in the grasses by the side of the road. But by the evening time, I saw many of them lying still, on the road. Day 64: Friday 14th May. Davangere to SiraI saw a great deal of the backs of lorries, and most of them had 'sound horn' or 'horn please'. When overtaking in India, or just approaching any other vehicle or pedestrian on the road, the convention is to sound the horn. So, everyone gets deafened. Day 63: Thursday 13th May. Hubli to DavangereThe previous day Rao had warned me about cycling at night. He reckoned it was too dangerous and all his colleagues agreed. Day 62: Wednesday 12th May. Hubli (Mango Day)On the day I'd expected to be moving on my bike again, I couldn't get started, but I did manage to buy a some fruit from the mango market. I also received a warning. Day 60: Monday 10th May. Mumbai to Pune (by bus)When I eventually arrived in Pune, whilst looking for a cheap hotel, I met a fellow Raleigh cycle owner. Then my luck changed once more Day 59: Sunday 9th May. MumbaiTraffic in Mumbai was completely nuts. The combination of roasting temperatures, air pollution and pointless noise pollution, and the seemingly utter absence of any form of traffic regulation made crossing the road a real challenge. Day 58: Saturday 8th May. Arrival in MumbaiOn arrival, although I had been at the front of the economy class seats, and the plane was boarded and disembarked from the front entrance, I was the last person to approach the customs officers. They would not let me out of the airport. Day 57: Friday 7th May. Flight from Istanbul to MumbaiRight from the start of the day, it was clear that I would not make it to the bridge, which was about 30 minutes away by cycle. I wasn't entirely convinced I could reach the Reception of the hotel. Day 56: Thursday 6th May. IstanbulMy mind was on the challenges of the day - getting the bike cleaned and packed, and getting items shipped home, but actually, I was quite ill. Day 55: Wednesday 5th May. Ataturk to IstanbulWithin minutes of leaving the hotel, the traffic slowed right down. There had been a crash. Last night I had been very nervous about cycling in Istanbul - I'm sure I could might been killed had I continued. Day 54: Tuesday 4th May. Corlu to AtaturkAt last, after all this time, I had a view of the sea - I was really excited. Today was the big push for Istanbul. Today I would reach my destination in Europe, or so I thought. Day 53: Monday 3rd May. Necatiye to Corlu. There were plenty of red flags flying, so the people were quite patriotic. I hoped that, for one, the flags would fly in the opposite direction, so the wind would not be in my face. Day 52: Sunday 2nd May. Edirne to NecatiyeThere was no mistaking the fact that I was in a different culture and country. Every town had a mosque, and the call to prayer could be heard everywhere. Day 51: Saturday 1st May. Dimitrovgrad to EdirneThere was only one thing in my mind today. I wanted to get out of Bulgaria. I didn't hate the place, I was just fed up with it. I'd had too many disappointments and met too many rude people. I think I'd just been a bit unlucky. Day 50: Friday 30th April, Veliko Tarnovo to Gorna and train to DimitrovgradAfter another tricky day in Bulgaria, the day ended with a night in what must have been one of the worst hotels anywhere. But I wasn't alone in my room. This creature was wandering around the sheets. Day 49: Thursday 29th April, Plevin to Veliko TarnovoThe route was simple, I just needed to go from Pleven to Lovec and then towards Gorna Orjhovica. There was a campsite along the way. I didn't think it would take me thirteen hours. Day 48: Wednesday 28th April, Corabia to PlevinThis was the day I completed 2,000 cycled miles (3,218 kilometres). I'd been instructed by James Driscoll to crack open a beer at the precise moment, and to take things easy. I managed one out of two. Day 46: Monday 26th April, Plosca to CorabiaAnca and Christina had to leave early to catch the school bus. The previous night I'd said I would call in to the school as I past it on the road to Carabia - but that was before I knew the school was in a different direction. Day 45: Sunday 25th April, Salcia to Plosca. The concrete floor was flat, so ideal to put the stove on, and the disused petrol pump gave some shelter from the wind. The wind had been a problem and would continue to be a problem. Day 44: Saturday 24th April, Drobeta-Turnu Severin to SalciaFrom the beginning, I've never really known where I would sleep from one day to the next. Tonight I slept in a very strange place. Day 43: Friday 23rd AprilFor today only, I'll leave you with an additional collection of photographs of the scenery of the area. Day 43: Friday 23rd April, Moldova Vech to Drobeta-Turnu Severin (Holiday in Romania - St Georges Day)From the moment I'd set off from Manchester, I had been looking forward to this leg of the journey, which I suspected would be the most beautiful. Day 42: Thursday 22nd April, Moldova VechThe night before, Stephan applied Kerosene, boiled with rock salt, with a feather, to my right leg. I'd try anything to shift the pain, and I did... Day 39 : Monday 19th April, Szeged to LovrinBy the end of the day I'd had just about enough. I turned off the road, put up my tent and hoped the night would pass quickly. Day 37 : Saturday 17th April, Baja to SzegedI didn't sleep well at the Hotel Sobri Halaszcsarda because I kept waking up with the pain in my right leg. It was becoming obvious that I needed to do something about it, but I still had a long way to go. Day 35 : Thursday 15th April, Budapest to SzalkszentmartonThe day began well but it didn't stay that way. The rain came, the wind came, I managed to get myself lost again and then things got worse. Day 34 : Wednesday 14th April, BudapestDay off in Budapest. This bridge, the 'Chain Bridge' is particularly delightful at night. I'd crossed this the previous evening on my bike. Day 33 : Tuesday 13th April, Acs to BudapestWhen I saw a sign for 'Hotel Casablanca' I immediately headed for it. 'Casablanca' was Jacinta's favourite film. Day 32 : Monday 12th April, Mosonmagyarovar to AcsIn the morning, the skies were full of cloud. Before too long, the clouds released a lot of heavy rain, and didn't stop all day. Day 31 : Sunday 11th April, Bad Deutsch Altenburg to MosonmagyarovarHaving enjoyed a couple of days off with Jacinta, I decided to try to cover some miles on this Sunday, as well as getting to a church. Bratislava seemed a good bet. Day 29 : Friday 9th April, ViennaJacinta and I had a day off in Vienna, wandering about, visiting places of note, buying little presents for loved ones at home... Day 28 : Thursday 8th April, ViennaOnly one thing mattered today. I had to be at the airport at the right time to meet my wife, Jacinta. Day 27 : Wednesday 7th April, Krems to ViennaThe journey to Vienna should have been a comfortable 75Km ride, but in fact it was close to 110Km. A nightmare day. At one point it felt as if we were riding through a time machine. Day 26 : Tuesday 6th April, Hutting to KremsAt the start of our last day with Helmut, the sun rose over the Danube. It looked as if it would be a fine day. Day 25 : Easter Monday, 5th April, Oberranna to HuttingEven though our paths are sometimes completely blocked our destinations remain the same. Ten tons of rubble wouldn't stop us heading in the right direction. Day 24 : Easter Sunday, 4th April, Passau to OberrannaIt was Easter Sunday, I was about a thousand miles from home, but I was going to celebrate Easter. I also made some new friends. Day 22 :Friday 2nd April, Riedenburg to StraubingIt was Good Friday. Today was a day for fasting and abstaining from meat. The shops made sure of this – they were all closed. Day 21: Thursday April 1st, Nurnberg to RiedenburgThere wasn't much to see on the new 'Main-Donnau-Kanal', but the 'Euro benches' added a splash of colour. Day 19 : Tuesday March 30th, Werthein to NurnburgI was in Bavaria (Bayern in German) and passing this stone I was reminded that tonight Manchester United would play Bayern Munich in Munich. A new aim for the day was to watch the match somewhere. Day 18 : Monday March 29th, Aschaffenburg to WertheimThe trouble with the young, like Daniel, is that they're prepared to go to MacDonalds, pay a fortune and eat rubbish. But even he won't do it a second time. Actually, we felt obliged to eat there since we intended to make use of their facilities. Day 16 : Saturday March 27th, Mainz to FrankfurtAfter updating website for 6 hours the night before and forgetting to have an evening meal, I didn't feel wonderful, and things didn't get any better. Until I saw this... Day 15 : Friday March 26th, St Goar to MainzThe campsite at St Goar has the potential to be excellent, and the toilet and shower facilities are outstanding But the facilities for washing clothes are inadequate. Day 12 : Tuesday 23rd March, Bochum to DusseldorfCycling to the Rhine should have been a simple affair from Bochum, but it proved to be a little more difficult than expected. Day 11 : Monday March 22nd, A day off in BochumThe main aim of the day was to purchase a waterproof tent so that during the weeks ahead I'd have more chance of sleeping during the night. Day 08: Friday March 19th, Schoonhoven to Wijk Bij DuurstedeIt had rained during the night, and the tent had leaked. It rained as I got up, got dressed and packed. It rained as I packed up the wet tent. I made a shelter under the basha and made hot milk and cereal. Day 07: Thursday March 18th, Rotterdam to SchoonhovenI was hoping to find a way out of Rotterdam and the Rhine Cycle Track, or just the Rhine. Day 05 : Tuesday March 16th, Cambridge to ColchesterI saw a sign for 'Linton' so I called in to remember my Uncle Vin and Aunty Audrey who lived in Linton North Yorthshire Day 04 : Monday March 15th, Kettering to CambridgeAfter saying goodbye to Kathryn Hopkins, who welcomed me to the Kettering Park Hotel the night before, I set off for Cambridge. Day 03 : Sunday March 14th, Leicester to KetteringIt was Mothering Sunday. I knew my children would be with their mother today and looking after her in a special way and Joe was preparing a roast dinner. I was thinking about my own mother too. Day 02: Saturday March 13th - Marton to LeicesterIt was a very cold night and I didn't sleep well, especially after hearing voices immediately outside my tent at around 4.00am. But I knew the bike and wheels had been carefully locked to a big tree trunk and I eventually dropped off again - but not for long - I was up at dawn. Day 01: Friday March 12th - Manchester to MartonThe first day involved leaving home, leaving friends, leaving Manchester, dealing with publicity and setting off. |
