  • Day 75 : Tuesday May 25th. RTU

Brother James had not been in his home country, England, since the early 1970s and he'd not had a plate of chips since. I'd not had any chips myself for two an a half months and I was feeling it. But 40 years was a bit much! The poor man needed sorting out. Something had to be done.
  • Day 82 : Tuesday June 1st. Chennai to London

This was a strange day, because it didn't really have a beginning it just carried on from the previous day, because I hadn't slept the night before.
  • Day 80 : Sunday May 30th. Chennai

In the morning there was a fire nearby and a huge cloud of thick black smoke formed. It didn't look at all healthy. After about 30 minutes or so, the first fire engine appeared. It wouldn't be the last.
  • Day 77 : Thursday May 27th. RTU

I'd set off from Manchester with the aim of raising £8,000 to build ten quality homes for ten poor families to replace homes like this one. I wanted to see houses under construction before leaving RTU.
  • Day 72 Saturday 22nd May. RTU

Brother James had disappeared to Bodi, a couple of days before, as he tends to spend three or four days there each week, and I'd been prevented from going to see him there as, apparently, Brother James thought I would be 'taking too much of a risk' if I went there by motorcycle. This was a bit rich coming from a man who, at 85, is still riding on a two-wheeler around RTU.
  • Day 74 : Monday May 24th. RTU

For some reason, there was a big staff meeting for all the departments of RTU, and it was to be held at a different venue - a village where RTU was doing some work. This was a perfect opportunity for me to escape to Kodaikanal - if I could get my hands on a motorcycle.
  • Day 73 Sunday 23rd May. Brother James 85 today.

It was 23rd May, Bro Jim's 85th birthday! I'd cycled a long way for a slice of his birthday cake, and, thankfully, Jo and David Cassidy, two very special old friends of Brother Jim, had sent a beautiful cake.
  • Day 76 : Wednesday May 26th. RTU

Having read about some of the terrible family backgrounds of some of the children under the care of RTU, visiting RTU's 'Miriam Children's Village' was a most delightful and humbling experience, a genuine highlight of my stay at RTU.
  • Day 79 : Saturday May 29th. Chennai

The plan was to spend the time updating the website, but there was a power cut which lasted for around 8 hours. There was nothing anyone could do. The substation at the local Polytechnic had blown up.
  • Day 78 : Friday May 28th. Chennai

St Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles, came to India in 52A.D. And he died there as a martyr in 72A.D. He was buried at Mylapore, San Thome, Chennai and the Basilica of St Thomas is built over the tomb - one of only three churches in the world built over the tomb of an Apostle.

Dear Mr A,

I was so thrilled to hear that you have finally headed back to India (we talked about it many times over a curry!) I wish I had some words of wisdom to keep you going on your journey, but all I can really say is thank you.
You are an inspiration to us all, and constantly remind me of the important things in life. I just hope I can have the same impact on my students as
you have on me.

I hope you are well, smiling, and pedalling fast.

My thoughts, prayers, and songs are with you, Sir.

Take care, love

Paul's Dad. Saturday 15th May

Hello Son,
Some things cannot be easily expressed. I was wondering what to write when my eyes looked on the wall and I read the words of the illuminated
script (signed by Bro. Jim) which you gave me for my birthday in 1993. It reads "Lord, help me to remember that nothing is going to happen to me today which You and I together, cannot handle."

So keep smiling. You ride - on bike or bus - in good company in a peace which the world cannot give, but which you share with Jacinta, your family and friends and everyone you meet.

God bless, Love, Dad.

Who lit a candle for you at Lourdes on May 13th.

Helen Sidlow. Wednesday 12th May

Hello Uncle Paul...not read the blog for a few weeks, just caught up on it all now and listened to your interview on bbciplayer - then told all my
friends on facebook to listen to it too! Sounds like your journey is going well, except for the dead dogs, bad water and earwigs! (I felt a bit gutted for the beetle getting run over when he was so close to crossing the road. sounds like a bad joke doesn't it?!)
But you are in India now, WOW! Keep pedalling, DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!! - wouldn't want to dehydrate at this stage now you've come so far - and keep smiling :) The Romanian people
sound lovely, just think of those old lady's watching the world go by whenever you come into contact with horrible angry people. That or tell the nasty people where to get off, but that is not in your nature and would get you nowhere but trouble. Anyway, i'm rambling, i can't wait to read about the rest of your journey. I keep imagining the day you ride into Village
India on your bike and how you are going to feel, what an amazing moment that is going to be for you!! Keep thinking of that and keep going
soldier!
Thinking of you lots, Lots of Love, Helen xxxxx

P.s- you're looking a bit hairy - a shave and a haircut wouldn't go amiss b4 u go to Big James' birthday party! :) Joke. xxxxxxxx

Shirley & George. Wednesday 5th May

Hello Paul,
Another month gone and WOW you have covered some miles. No wonder you have tired and aching bones. Some people might be saying to them-selves 'I bet he's sorry to have started' but we are sure Paul
that you will prove them to be very wrong. We have always found that what ever the task is that has been set before you, you have solved or at least made a very good effort. This is one of the tasks that we are sure you will achieve and with great pride. We do hope that you are feeling a lot better after having some rest. My mother always said about me 'The trouble with George is that he never knows when to stop'!! but Paul if you set yourself something to do, you have to finish it don't you but don't forget your WELL EARNED RESTS to re-charge your 'body battery'.Now that you are getting into warmer climates don't forget to drink plenty of fluids.
I always appear to write long epistles and lectures, but we mean well and messages from 'home' we are sure mean a lot to you. You are constantly in our thoughts and prayers.
God Bless.

Sue & Steve. Saturday 1st May

Hi Paul - At last we are on a computer which doesn't take 3 hours to warm up and I can send you a message of encouragement!(Steve's 50th birthday present from his Mum - well done & thank you May!) How far are you now from Istanbul? It looks about 2.5 mm on the map!
Keep going - have got the whole Chester Kingsway Children's Centre team backing you as well as half Wrexham Maelor hospital!!

We are at the caravan this weekend for a bit of r+r following a hectic month with May being in hospital in Wrexham & Birmingham.(All stable 'ish'
with May & Harry now for now...)Sun is beginning to come out over the bay now so will probably head off for a walk. Take care - am saying one (or a good few!) for you.
Love Sue xx

you!

am on a crash diet!!!

Shirley & George Colson. Thursday 22nd April

Hello Pedlar, Sorry to hear via your journal that you've been a little bit too ambitious by, travelling too long without a good rest. Anyway if the remedy of salt & kerosene is working, to-gether with the rest time, then that's just what is needed for you to achieve the final goal. It's a tough one at the moment but with all the messages of inspiration to-gether with the prayers which are being said for you, you WILL complete your challenge. You sure have met a lot of lovely and very kind people during your journey and we are sure that there are still very many more to meet. Rest a while Paul, you deserve it and it will make you a stronger pedlar. With love and best wishes Shirley & George.

Keep going Paul, well done. Put's my little sponsored 13 mile walk for cancer on Sat night into insignificance. (Probably spelt wrong!!.) Although over 7000 people took part and there was a brilliant atmosphere. My bloody big toe was killing though!!! (Jacinta said got to make you laugh.) Be careful out there and don't try anything out of the ordinary. Don't think that's possible!

Shirley & George Colson. Monday 19th April.

Hello Paul, According to our up-date you have so far cycled 1493 miles. What an achievment! You appear to be making quite a few friends en route, which is great in the fact you are not altogether alone on your 'long haul'. What a lovely re-union you and Jacinta had in Vienna. A lot of catching up to do! How wonderful to have such a loyal & understanding wife, especially during your venture to India. Well Paul you have raised approx' £1000.00 away from the mid target and are you half-way there also? The on-coming journey is not quite as easy going through the un-predicted countries state of affairs, but knowing you, you will cope with whatever is put before you no matter what. Pedal on Paul and 'keep your eyes on the road'!! 'God Bless' Love & very best wishes, Shirley & George

The wise man said .... take the plough and the forge and the mallet and the lute. The things you have fashioned in necessity and for delight. For in reverie you cannot rise above your achievements or fall lower than your failures. And take with you all men. For in adoration you cannot fly higher than their hopes nor humble yourself lower than their despair. And if you would know God, be not a solver of riddles. Its nice to read how so many people have been so kind to you, bringing you cups of tea and welcoming you wherever you go, I knew you'd be fine! I found your site quite by accident, what a great thing you're doing riding all the way to India for a good cause. I check back regularly to see how you're getting on, and wanted to send my best wishes for your journey.

I also wanted to say how touched we are that you've dedicated your ride to dad - he'd be very honoured that someone had thought of him whilst embarking on such a huge mission!

I've told mum and she's now spreading the word, hopefully we can both help you with some fundraising among friends and family.

Hello again Paul,

The message from your dad is so very true, although I would add that you've already got one set of wings as you are already a 'true saint', to wings which your dad are referring to of course are the very precious wings which only the very true chosen few receive and you are one of those people.

Paul you have achieved so far a good part of your mission, and you will, we are quite sure complete your journey, but don't forget to 're-charge your battery'. Jacinta, I understand, is keeping No 28's tradition going, and that is apart from looking after all your family she is also looking after 'Eil & Flo', making sure that they are well fed and watered, during the proprietor's mission to 'Reach the Un-reached' in India. Keep pedalling on Paul, you are getting nearer to your goal every day.

God Bless. George.

Eileen. Monday April 5th

Hello Paul.

Peter Bellamy-Knight, John and the Dean of Manchester were asking about you at the cathedral yesterday. I'm so proud of you. Everyone must be fed up of me talking about you, but that's not going to stop me. You are the son I never had. I'm pig sick it's not me meeting you in Vienna!

Love Eileen.

Paul's Dad. Sunday April 4th

He who climbs wheresoe'er will find wings waiting there. So keep on pedalling onwards and upwards. Well done so far, keep on smiling! Love Dad.

Andrea and Frank from Bochum. Sunday April 4th

Dear Paul

Every day we read your blog. We pray for you and hope you are still feeling good.

So we hope on Wednesday you have the chance to see ManU against Bayern.

Good luck and a lot of "angels" on your way to India.

David and Jo Cassidy. Sunday April 4th

Dear Paul

God bless you on this Easter Day, and may he continue to keep you safe on your journey to Brother James.

Dear Paul

Hello Paul, Yes it's us again it looks like youve raied enough donations at present for 3 and a bit houses, lets hope that we will still get the donation rolling in from a lot more people yet.

Today is Good Friday and no doubt you will have been worshiping in your own private way. Keep pedaling on and we hope that Eileen's saddle is treating you well and that you are not too 'saddle sore'. Incidentally, Eileen & Flo are coming to see us next Saturday with Chris & John and, no doubt, she will be able to tell us a little bit more about your travels & we will be able to show her an up-to date map of your journey so far.

God Bless Paul, we are sure that you will complete your mission DV.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the inspiration. Although Jax is taking it a bit too far in suggesting a biking holiday!

I'm tuning in every night for an update and to see how bad German public art really is.

Keep healthy and don't do a Rooney.

John Bruce. Friday April 2nd

God's speed. How about also setting up a new technology there? Don't know if you know it but NWDA is fully funding Phizzit through to product. But what then is anyone's guess. Future looks dire. Have fun and don't fall off too often.

Shirley & George Colson. Friday April 2nd

Hello Paul, We are following your journey daily and are very, very proud of you and your ambition.

We are in touch with Eileen also and she tells us that you are suffering from your back problem at the moment. Do take care and rest a while perhaps in a hostel occasionally. God Bless you Paul. You are constantly in our prayers.
